Ok, so i'm gradually forming my own opinion on political matters...
Dudley was quite an eye-opener!
The day starts with the usual proceeds - everyone gathering, looking a bit knackered and a bit scruffy (no offense to people but its usually after a heavy Friday night!) and getting the bus at silly o'clock in the morning to get to Dudley...
We are then told on the coach that there has been a 'change of plan' slightly...
The EDL (English Defence League), who were meant to be marching through Dudley have been confined to the outskirts and we have been confined to a public carpark at the top of town... about 3 miles from each other...
Everyone is basically getting bored as UAF (that's our camp, Unite Against Fascism) try to put on a type of 'festival', with some of the worst acts I've ever seen! Literally we all thought it was a joke to begin with, but then realsing it wasn't, I give FULL RESPECT to the two guys who performed the very worst live act in history! They didn't care! And thats what makes them cool
Anyway, my friend and I thought we would go into the midst of the EDL camp, to take some photos and interview a few racists... oh, and my friend is a quite petit muslim girl.
As we got down to the camp, we started to get those looks - the sort of "What the f**k d'you think you're doing here?" looks...
Initially, we were staying by the police, as the majority of this motley crew are football hooligans, chavs and generally unsavoury people.
My friend however, was fearless and insisted we went in deeper - "Just say we work for the UEL student paper, and that we're neutral" she said. She previously had spent (at a different rally) 6 hours amoungst these people! Balls of steel.
People were trying to cover their faces, but did start giving their reasons for why they were there. The younger ones didn't have much to say... A lot of them couldn't understand, why the papers portrayed them as racist! They had some ridiculous arguements, and it seemed quite rehersed... You see when talking to the 'press', you want to appear correct, not in a bad light!
As we were going, after about 40 mins, we saw fleets of coaches piling up, to join the already 1000 strong.
Thats when it happened.
The last guy we wanted to see, steps off the bus. This is one the leading members of the EDL, a SIKH called Amit Singh. What is a Sikh doing leading a racsit party you may wonder? He is part of the EDL's attempt at a non-racist image. He in fact hates Muslims, because his family were killed by them.
And he met my friend at the last rally. And recognised her...
Now everyone started yelling at us, and we had to get out of their pretty quickly. If we had stayed any longer, we would have been in deep shit!
Getting back to the camp, we founf the disorganised UAF festival, and the local muslim community, who were acting like thugs. Their mosque had been attacked completely and they were out for blood. It was going from one gang to the next.
Then towards 4.30, suddenly everyone was leaving. Why? Because 3,000 EDL members had gathered, rushed and broken through the police lines, and were advancing towards the UAF camp.
We had barely 800 people...
We were being 'evacuated'...
The general feeling on the bus was that we had turned tail and ran...
leaving the muslim community to face the music.
How I feel about it? I think its a huge statement that we need MORE PEOPLE TO STOP THIS EVIL.
When you are outnumbered considerably against drunk psychotic thugs as a non-violent organisation what choice do you have? Take the beating of your life? NO. You intimidate them with overwhelming numbers!! Not the other way around!!!
